Like their human companions, most pets will need some type of surgery in their lifetimes. The most common procedure is spay and neuter, but sometimes pet surgery for serious injuries or illnesses is necessary. The Vet’s Animal Hospital of Denver, CO is equipped with a state-of-the-art surgical suite and diagnostic lab to ensure your pet receives the very best treatment. Our veterinarians and technicians are trained to keep your pet comfortable and stress-free during their surgical procedure.
Pet Surgery – What To Expect
Before their procedure, your pet will be given a complete physical exam and a blood sample will be tested in our lab to identify any underlying issues that might cause complications.
During surgery, your pet will be anesthetized and fitted with a catheter, and an IV will be inserted to provide the fluids necessary to keep blood pressure stabilized. Technicians will continuously monitor your pet’s vital signs during the procedure.
Afterward, your pet will rest in a recovery room for a few hours of observation before it is time for discharge. Most patients will be able to go home on the same day, although your vet might want them to spend the night. Plan for your pet to spend an entire day at the hospital for their procedure.
Your vet will advise you on what post-surgery care you’ll need to provide at home and if you should schedule any follow-up exams. In general, your pet should avoid exertion and stay indoors for a week or two, and you’ll need to take precautions to keep them from biting and licking at their incisions and opening them back up.
